Zero Turn Mowers has made the hectic job fun. Also known as ZTR (Zero Turn Radius), mowers were commercially introduced back in 1949 and named “Ride King” Source.
As technology evolved, these get more reliable, comfortable, cheaper, and more efficient than the predecessors.
Why ZTR?
Zero-turn mowers are preferred over other mowers as these are much more efficient, comfortable, safe, and energy by producing even cut results.
These are costlier than other lawn mowers, and if you have a lawn area of more than 1/2 acre, you can consider buying these. Otherwise, don’t buy; you can go for a regular push lawn mower.
I will talk about entry level, mid-level, and commercial level ZTR lawnmowers. You can choose according to your requirements.
I will also explain the main features to consider when buying a ZTR lawn lower: safety, cut size, deck size, engine size & fuel, horsepower, comfort, and tire width.

- Power: 16.5 HP Briggs & Stratton Engine
- Cutting width: 30″
- Adjustable cutting heights: 6 positions (1.5″ to 4″)
- Capabilities: Side discharge, mulching, bagging
- Warranty: 2 years
- Weight: 395 pounds
- Rugged steel tube frame
- Convenient control panel
- Steering is easy and comfortable
- Lightweight and affordable
- Small cutting deck and HP rating
- Uses a single blade
Overview
The Husqvarna RZ3016 is a compact zero-turn lawnmower that can be used for small lawns. This mower offers excellent performance and a great experience while driving about its weight and price.
To power this up, there’s a 16.5HP Briggs & Stratton engine (500cc) that uses a 12V key start system to operate. It has quality oil filters, and there is a 3-year warranty on the engine offered by Briggs & Stratton.
Since the mower’s size is smaller than others, the fuel tank capacity is limited to 3 gallons.
It uses a Hydrostatic transmission that allows the user to drive at speeds of up to 6.5 mph forward and 3.5 mph in reverse.
The gear shifting is smooth, and there is great traction on its pneumatic tires, which makes driving easier and under control, even on bumpy and wet surfaces.
The cutting deck is 30″ wide and made of 13-gauge quality stamped steel. When you start mowing, you’ll notice the airflow system that throws clippings out easily.
This is beneficial when you’re using the side discharge option. You can also opt to bag these clippings or slice them into finer bits using a mulching blade.
This mower uses only 1 blade to slice through grass which sometimes proves to be a drawback, especially in not-so-ideal lawn conditions like wet grass or rough patches.
This may leave some grass uncut or with burnt ends, meaning that there is a possibility of slight variance in grass height during these conditions.
There’s also a convenient control panel easily visible and accessible when you sit and start the mower. It contains functions like ignition, throttle, choke, height adjustment levers, and access to the fuel tank.
The mower comes with a 3-year limited warranty which is-line with the industry standard. If you encounter any issues, you can always call customer support to sort things out.
It can deal with hard grass like Zoysia Grass.
2. Troy-Bilt Mustang Fit Riding Mower | Entry Level ZTR
- Power: 452cc Troy-Bilt Engine
- Cutting width: 34″
- Adjustable cutting heights: 8 positions (1.5″ to 4.5″)

- Weight: 616 pounds
- Integrated Deck Wash
- Dual suspension system
- Reinforced heavy-duty frame
- Twin hydro – Dual EZT transmission

- Tank capacity is small
Overview
This mower by Troy-Bilt has been designed primarily for use in small and medium-sized lawns.
It features an engine made by Troy-Bilt itself that has an engine displacement of 452cc. Compared to other zero-turn mowers, the engine might not be powerful enough, which is why it is suitable for small and medium residential owners only.
It comes with a cutting deck of 34 inches with a twin-blade system that can spin at very great speeds. The mower is primarily designed to discharge clippings from the side, which is perhaps the fastest way to complete the mowing task.
It does, however, create a bit of a mess on the lawn for the time being.
You can also opt for mulching and bagging capabilities if you buy the mulching kit and bag online. The mulch created helps speed up the decomposition process, which makes it cost effective. There are 8 positions that you can set the deck’s height at. This would allow you to cut within a range between 1.5″ to 4″.
The Mustang FIT 34 features a Twin hydro – Dual EZT transmission that is designed for enhanced control. It allows you to accelerate and achieve a top speed of 7 mph going forward and 2.5 mph in reverse.
A downside of this mower is that you can only store a maximum of 2 gallons of fuel inside the tank. So, refilling the tank would be more frequent as compared to other zero-turn lawnmowers.
Mowing in tough grass conditions becomes easy when driving with its durable wheels due to its grip. For a better experience, a comfortable padded seat with a high back is installed with dual suspension rings.
There is also a pretty large area as a footrest where you can place your feet and keep some items.

Grass Type
If you deal with thick grass like Zoysia or Bermuda grass, you need a more powerful engine ( at least 2 cylinders) and blades for thick grass.
I always recommend having high quality blades, and even you are going for a much smoother lawn. The reason is these blades will save your fuel as well as will give you a better result.
Transmission
A hydrostatic transmission is preferred as you need not much maintenance as well you will get a smoother ride. This use uses hydraulic fluids to switch gears and send more power to the drive shaft.
Hydrostatic models are more reliable and powerful.
Durability and Aesthetics
Always go for the branded one and try to get a minimum of 2 years of limited warranty. Although most of the brand’s offers may even higher. Once you have all the requirements on your list, it will be rather easy for you to choose the right one.
Weight
It is an important factor when doing the cleaning and other maintenance. Yes, you can use a normal jack system to live up, but a smaller one you can tilt like that easily.
Digital Displays
A few models have digitally displayed where you can get operating rpm, height setting of the deck. This is a luxury feature as you need to make manual adjustments otherwise.
Levers and Controls
Always look for ergonomic controls; otherwise, you may get fatigued after the job is done. You need to get where you can use easy push and pull of levers.
Deck Protection
Debris can damage your mower if you don’t have any safety protection. You must find this feature in whatever model you are going to buy.
ZTR Mower or Tractor
This is a common question being asked everywhere; the zero turn mower and tractor do the same job, but the features are quite the opposite.
ZTR is quite costlier than the lawn tractor. The fact is, in ZTR, you have two hydrostatic transmissions and one in a lawn tractor.
Zero-turn mowers are for neat, clean, and precision cutting, as we see in a football stadium, while tractors are for farms.
Final Verdict
Keep in mind that mowing grass is the only purpose of the ZTR mower. You can now quickly around obstacles, but these are not designed to pull things. Yes, these can do a little bit, but they will destroy the hydrostatic transmissions if you do.
I have tried to cover most of the brands and provide you a buying guide for lawnmowers. If you follow along with all these, I am sure you can get a good one.
There is no ideal one that I can suggest to you as it depends on several factors the major ones are the budget, comfortability and the area.
