What Type of a Drill Bit is Best for You?

Metal Drill BitsMasonry Drill Bits Wood Drill BitsDiamond Drill Bits Glass Drill Bit
Metal drill bits are specially designed bits for boring holes into various kinds of metal. There are also numerous types and designs of metal drill bits. Cheaper metal drill bits can be used easily when drilling softer metals, but when you need to drill through hardened and heat-treated material, you will need to purchase a better quality bit.

See our Top-Rated Metal Drill Bits

Masonry Drill Bits are used for drilling stone, brick, concrete, or tile. The tip of these bits is made from tungsten carbide. Others may have a silicone alloy bronze for the cutting tip. These drill bits are made in all different lengths and diameters. They should be used with a slow speed rill to avoid overheating.

See our Top-Rated Metal Drill Bits

Wood drill bits are bits that are specifically designed to be used to drill through wood material. You need always to have the proper type of bit for each job. Just as you wouldn’t want to use a masonry drill bit to drill into metal & drywall but you shouldn’t use tile drill bits to drill into wood.

See our Top-Rated Wood Drill Bits

Diamond drill bits are specially hardened bits that are required when extra cutting power and hardness is essential. Diamond drill bits take advantage of the diamond’s natural hardness by fixing tiny diamonds along the edge of a drill bit using a process known as electroplate bonding.

See our Top-Rated Diamond Drill Bits

Glass drill bits are used to drill a hole in the glass. A person needs to understand that the only element harder than glass is a diamond and even, so the project is not easy to complete. Low drilling speeds and plenty of coolant on the bit’s tip are required to achieve the desired result.

Who Makes the Best Drill Bits?

Make sure to understand the there is no universal drill bit that can perform all the tasks. Like a masonry drill bit cannot work where a Metal Drill bit is required and vice versa.

Normally, we consider a harder material bit for a softer material, but this is also not the case as sometimes we need wood drill bits and so on.

Before we dig in deeper, please read to have more clarity on the nomenclature that helps you understand and choose the best one for your job.

Remember! we are going to buy the ‘Holes,’ not the Drillbit itself.

Drill Bits Guide

Always keep in mind three things while choosing a drill bit;

  1. Material
  2. Geometry
  3. Coating

Drill Bit Material

The main materials are Cobalt Steel and Carbide;

Carbon added to iron during melting operation makes its steel. There are certain conditions that carbon should be less than 2%. This percentage of carbon decides if it is low carbon steel, like less than 0.8%, or high carbon steel that is 0.8%-2%. The same Cobalt is added to enhance its functionality. These are factors that decide if it high-speed steel or low-speed steel.

  • Soft – Low-carbon Steel: The most inexpensive drill bits of the lot. Frequent sharpening is required. Best for wood. It has a concise life span.
  • High-Carbon Steel: It is just an upgraded version of low carbon steel. Here, hardening and tempering techniques are applied to get more reliable results and slightly increase the life span at a minimal cost.
  • Tungsten carbide: Very expensive, but premium quality drill bits are of this carbide. The addition of carbide makes the material harder but brittle as well. This is best for the hardest materials. It cannot be used for hand drills. It is very brittle and cannot be used for hand drills due to safety issues.
  • HSCO – High-Speed Cobalt: Introduction of cobalt in steel increases its strength and sustainability at higher temperatures. This helps to drill through hard material as well as stainless steel.

Geometry Features

A drill bit has a very complex structure. Though it seems simple, it is not!

Drill Bit Length

Shorter the drill bit more control on accuracy and precision on the job. That’s why try to choose the shortest possible drill bit whatever work you are going to perform.

Following all the length factors you need to keep in mind;

  1. Stub – This term is used for shorter drill bits
  2. Jobber – This term is used for longer drill bits

Drill Tip Angle

118° is a Standard: The most common drill bit. An angle is for Jobber (long drill bits). This is used for mild steel, Aluminum, and soft materials. A low-speed drill bit.

135° Self-Centering: This is used for hard and tougher material. These are high-speed drill bits.

Moreover, Helix Angle, flute, lip, shank angle, etc., you need to consider.

Flute Design

30° Standard: This is the most commonly used angle for a drill bit.
Parabolic Design: This is used for wood, masonry, plastic, aluminum, and softer materials to drill as it will remove chips by itself.

Considering these factors will help you better save you time and money and safety concerns.

Drill Point Coating

  • Black Oxide: Increases chipping and reduces friction. Not good for Aluminum or non-ferrous materials to drill on.
  • Bright Oxide: Increases chipping and reduces friction. The best for plastic, wood, and non-ferrous materials to drill on.
  • Titanium Nitride –TiN: It helps for a speedy job and is better than uncoated drill bits. Wear resistance increases the tools of life.
  • Titanium Carbonitride – TiCN: This one is the best in the lot as it can do great work at stainless steel, cast iron, and aluminum well. Wear-resistant and can handle nickel & cobalt-based alloys. Not good for aluminum, though. It is of shiny gold color.
  • Zirconium Nitride: A golden color and can drill through tough materials. Craftsman brand uses it.
  • Diamond Powder Coating: Diamond is the hardest material on earth. Its coating does wonder. Diamond powder is coating at the tip of a drill bit. Costly, of course.

This is not limited here as most of the companies will provide you some custom materials as per your needs, like Titanium Aluminum Nitride (TiAlN), and these are more good than Titanium Nitride (TiN) & Titanium Carbon Nitride (TiCN).

Factors depend on your application and the budget.

Common Sizes of Drill Bits

Make sure to get a drill bit set with a maximum possible number of bits if you have any confusion in choosing the size of a drill bit.

For home jobs, the most common are 1/16″& 1/4″. Most of the kits have an addition (order) of 1/2″ in other sizes like 5/16″, 3/8″, and 7/16″.

Drill Machine Compatibility

Make sure the drill bit set you are going to buy should be compatible with your drill machine. For this, I can give a small tip that you should know the maximum/minimum chunk size of your drill machine. The other you can adjust, Though this is quite OK to take any for normal use.

Types Of Drill Bits

These are unlimited types of drill bits, from common to customized ones. For the homeowners/common users, we can discuss a few types…

  • Masonry Bits: These drill bits are used for most common purposes like concrete blocks & masonry work.
  • Twist Drill Bit: This one is mostly used to drill through wood, plastic, or thin metals.
  • Step Drill Bit: This type of drill bit is used for drilling through thin metals. It can drill through 1/4″ thick metals efficiently.
  • Brad Point Drill Bit: Best type when you are working through woods as its fluted edge helps to clear away chipping as the bit drills into the material.
  • Installer Bit: This is best when doing an electrical type job. It can handle plaster, concrete, and wood at the same time. These are bit longer bits, usually 12″ to 18″ in length.
  • Spade bits: These are used for woods when drilling through a large hole…
  • Auger bits: This type is also good for woods and is operated at a very low RPM.

Read More: Drill types & Drill Bit Parts simplified

Most people have a set of drill bits in their toolbox. Usually, it is a straight twist set that can be used on either metal or wood. This type of drill bit is inexpensive, and some can be sharpened. While you may never need another type of drill bit, some additional ones could make your next task a bit easier.

Also, make sure to watch the video here about Bits for Hardened Steel.

Common Types of Drill Bit

The following are the most common ones around.

  • HSS Twist Drill
  • Brad Point Drill Bit
  • Forstner Drill Bit
  • Hole Saw
  • Spade Drill Bit
  • Masonry Drill Bit
  • Countersink Drill Bit

Let see a small introduction of all these common drill bits.

HSS Twist Drill

This is the most common type of drill bit. This is designed for metal but can be used for wood and plastic. The full form is High-Speed Steel. It contains a uniform chamfered tip.

Brad Point Drill Bit

This is designed for drilling holes in wood but also can be used for plastic and soft material. It has a pointy tip. You will get a neat hole than that of twist bit. It will not wander but give you a better concentration.

Forstner Drill Bit

These are used for boring large diameter holes in wood (plastic cut sometimes). It is recommended over a spade bit under normal circumstances. It produces a clean exit.

Hole Saw

It cannot be stopped and must go through the materials once they started. It gives the best result for larger holes in wood and plastic. It consists of two parts the outer Saw section is connected to into the pilot twist bit part.

Spade Drill Bit

It produces holes rapidly but not that cleaner. A flat profile characterizes it.

Masonry Drill Bit

It is widely used for drilling through concrete and brick or block. It has an arrow-shaped tip and usually has a shiny silver finish.

Countersink Drill Bit

It is used to countersink holes in metals, wood, and plastic. This allows the fasteners to sit under the surface of the piece.

Let us see information about more Drill Bits

Add a Set of Masonry Bits

Masonry bits are used for drilling stone, brick, or tile, and you might be surprised at how often you’ll use one. It makes quick work of drilling through these types of materials, but you will want to keep it sharp. Using a lubricant is also necessary to keep the heat low when drilling. Remove the drill bit frequently to get the removed material out of the hole. You can find these bits in a variety of sizes for just about any job.

Countersink Bits Save You Time

If you’re going to need to countersink screws, then a countersink bit can save you some time. These bits will not only drill the hole you need but also leave an area at the top to leave the screw set flush with the material’s surface. These can make any project a bit more attractive when finished.

Diamond Core Bits

These are used for drilling glass but are not as durable as a tungsten carbide bit, which may also be used. These bits are rather expensive, as is the tungsten carbide. Diamond bits cannot be sharpened, and you’ll use two of these bits to one of the carbide bits. However, they are very effective when you need a light touch for drilling glass.

The specialty of Drill Bits

If you have a home shop that you spend a lot of time in, you might want to start collecting some of the available specialty drill bit types. Because some of these bits can be quite expensive, it’s best to do a bit of comparison shopping or wait until you find a good sale.

You should purchase the higher quality bits, as you’ll have less chance of breaking them, but also because some have a lifetime warranty.

Drill bits can be made from several different materials, such as tungsten carbide, diamond, and high-speed steel.

Each has its own uses, and all are not generally designed for simply drilling a hole in your wall. Some are made to be used for drilling metals, glass, brick, tile, and stone. Others work best when used to drill wood or softer materials.

Choosing the Right Drill Bit Types

Just as you wouldn’t use a sledgehammer to hang a fine art piece, you do not want to use the wrong drill bit for any project.

There is so much information available online about the different drill bit types, so it’s not hard to figure out which ones you’ll need for a certain project.

If you can’t find the information you need, stop by your local hardware store, as they should help you.

Consider the type of material you will be drilling, what type of drill you will use, and how big and deep the holes need to be. Since there are so many sizes available, you will probably find exactly the right size.

Some bits can handle drilling up to ten or twenty times their diameter, but the cause should be used with the finer bits, as they can break.

When drilling into certain materials, you will need to use a lubricant. Some of the more expensive drill bits have a lubricant already treated onto the bit, and some machines automatically add the required lubricant.

When drilling glass, water can be used to cool the bit, too. These are just a few things that you should keep in mind when drilling.

Other Drill Bit Types

You’ll find other bits that can help you do what you need to do. Bullet pilot point bits, flat wood bits, hole saws, Forstner bits, and wood auger bits are just a few.

The sizes of these bits will vary, but many sizes are considered standard. These are generally what you will find in drill bit sets. There are both traditional measurements and metric measurements available.

Things to Keep

When you are putting together a collection of drill bits, those mentioned above will probably handle most of your needs. If you find you need one of the specialty drill bit types, it won’t be difficult for you to locate it.

A simple search online will give you several suppliers, and your local hardware store is always an option, too.

With all of the drill bit types available today, it can be confusing to determine which one you will need. However, each drill bit will be labeled as to what it should be used for and what it should not be used for.

These are meant to be safety precautions, so it’s best to pay attention to these warnings.

Take-Home Point

Finally, I would recommend you to go through all the specifications in detail. You can also read the customer reviews at Amazon as well. Make sure to understand your project need the budget.

If your projects are for the long run, make sure to get any coated drill bit. If you are going for only house jobs, see the cleanliness and the Universal type drill bits.

I am no such a bit available, but you can choose that has maximum profile materials. High-speed steel with cobalt addition is best as a base material. On top of it, you can choose any relevant coating like Titanium, Oxide, Nitride, Carbide as per your need.

Good luck & that for making it till the end.

Top FAQ’s for Choosing a Drill Bit

What is the difference between the 135 & 118 point angle bit?

See 118 is considered is for the general purposes drill bit, and the 135 point drill bit is for engineering shop works. Also, the 135-degree angle is the best for harder, while 118 works well on abrasive materials. For example, a porcelain tile with a hard layer at the top 135 degree points is good, while drilling in a block wall 118 is fine.

135 degree helps for quick penetration and no walking or wandering.

What is a Countersink Drill Bit?

A countersink drill bit is good for hiding the screw head. These drill bits help smooth the finish by letting the screw head sink in the wood or metal surface.

If you see in the picture here, the first screw head is visible, then we widen the Pilot Hole with Countersink drill bit, and now it will hide, and later we can do more finishing for an extreme level of decoration.

This drill bit is a must to have for a DIY’s toolbox in any case.

What is the difference between Countersink and Counter-bore Drill Bit?

Both countersink and counter-bore drill bits help settle screw, bolt, or the fastener to settle with a workpiece. The counterbore drill bit is used to creates a flat-bottom cavity that helps the screw head, bolt, or washer to rest totally within the counter-bore.

How long do you want to keep it?

Are you the kind of person that likes to buy a new drill bit set when a bit wears out? Or do you like to sharpen your bits and keep using them for a long time? Depending on this, you can look into buying a slightly more expensive set that will last you a long time, or you can buy something cheap. Your choices are numerous.

How much do you want to pay?

A drill bit set can cost anywhere from a few dollars to a few hundred dollars. You have to decide how much you want to pay and decide to pick one within the price range you want.
